In “The Ten-Gallon Hat,” the American Western myth meets French chic. The black hat, a direct reference to Alex Katz’s portrait of a woman in a black hat, takes on a new role in the encounter between the cowboy’s independence and the staged elegance of the fashion image. Against the yellow background, the woman emerges with a gaze that holds ours.
