Why Simone?
She was one of the most influential intellectual women of her time. What impresses me most is how she created an original and self-reflective system from her vast knowledge. Everything she studied, researched, observed, and understood, she brought together into a holistic mindset that opened the eyes and minds of generations of women.
At the time, she was said to have “a man’s intellect”; her uncompromising and direct analysis was unparalleled – and highly unusual for a woman of her time.
It is with deep respect and gratitude that I honor Simone De Beauvoir – not only as a feminist pioneer, but perhaps even more so for her uncompromising defense of the freedom of thought. This is a fundamental human drive, all too often limited and controlled in society and life. Liberators of thought can shake up norms and change the rules of the game – as Simone De Beauvoir did. Through her work and her personality, she made the world a better place for women.
