Why Mayan?
“I mean We”!
It’s hard to think of anyone else who made her own life into art to the same extent as Maya Angelou. She shared her story—dramatic and powerful as it was—and used herself as raw material in everything from acting and singing to writing and directing, all to be heard and seen. An activist at heart, she became a champion for both racial and gender rights. Her autobiographies are pillars of support for countless African-American women.
It is an enormous burden to take on – to allow the rest of us to reflect on her life, which she shared so bravely and generously, in the hope of creating a better world for all. For me, it is deeply meaningful that she chose to share all of this through art.
