More about this artwork
The portrait bears traces of culture and heritage, yet the gaze is ambiguous in a self-aware way—more disapproving than melancholic, as if she has just stepped out of her own story.
The headscarf, often associated with covering and control, here becomes a patterned statement: an object that expresses elegance, individuality, and aesthetic power. The composition draws lines from flat paintings à la Alex Katz and Warhol's iconic silk prints, but also from Italian visual culture—Dolce & Gabbana, Monica Bellucci, Sophia Loren—without confining her to any of them. She emerges as her own figure.
As part of Recycled Icons, the painting explores how femininity, style, and presence can be reclaimed as distinct languages. Reuse functions as a silent form of resistance: a move that allows the icon to own its expression and exist on its own terms.
