Why Gertrude?
I find Gertrude's unique personality deeply fascinating. Her rejection of the ideals of her time for what women should be, in favor of making her own choices and finding her own path, is still admirable. She created a life based on her own will and wisdom, with herself – and the sheer force of her personality – as the undisputed center.
With enthusiasm and generosity, she turned her lifestyle into an almost artistic practice, creating space to surround herself with other great thinkers and strong personalities.
I particularly admire how Gertrude lived her values – whether it was about sexuality or investing. Women as investors is a topic I am passionate about: how women can spend their money on projects and ideas they believe in. The domain of “risk” has been the preserve of men for far too long – and financial power is personal power. For Gertrude Stein, wealth not only gave her the freedom to be fully herself, but also the opportunity to support others. A rich and meaningful life, no doubt!
