Why Frida?
Frida Kahlo created her paintings with an inexhaustible curiosity about herself. Her interest in her own origins and indigenous roots gave both her and her art an independent and distinctive voice.
But her subjects are far from self-absorbed expressions of a painful life – her autobiographical images carry meaning and activism. The works are narrative and characterized by surreal juxtapositions, which I believe made complete sense to her.
I am fascinated by her strength, and how she handled both illness and humiliation – as a temporary invalid and as the wife of a famous and dominant man. Throughout her life, she was a champion of freedom and individuality, both on her own behalf and as a role model for others.
