Why Simone?
She was one of the most influential intellectual women of her time. What impresses me the most is how she created an original and self-reflective system from her extensive knowledge. Everything that she studied, examined, observed and understood came together in a set of coherent ideas that opened the eyes and minds of generations of women. At the time, she was said to have the “mind of a man”; her uncompromising and straight-forward analysis was certainly one of a kind, and exceedingly rare for a woman of her time.
It is with appreciation and gratitude I pay tribute to Simone De Beauvoir, not just as a feminist pioneer, but maybe even more for being such an advocate of freedom of thought. This is a fundamental human drive, too often limited and controlled in life and society. Liberators of the mind can shake up norms and traditions, and become gamechangers - as in the case of Simone de Beauvoir. Through her work and personality she made the world a better place for women.
